East Texas is not what we expected. Last time we came though this gigantor state we entered from the west and drove across seemingly endless miles of flat farm land dotted with oil rigs. We then spent two weeks in Austin, left the Airstream in Houston for a week while we flew east to visit family, and upon return drove straight to Louisiana. Needless to say we didn’t see a lot of the state, and what we did see looked nothing like this.
Yeah, this is Texas. Surprise! Tim came across some info about Martin Dies Jr. State Park somewhere online, and since it was the right distance from our previous location (a small park in Louisiana that I’m not going to blog about because it rained the whole time and we barley left the house), and it had what sounded like nice waterfront sites we jumped on it. When we checked in the ranger recommended site 108 for its privacy, convenient shore access for putting our kayaks in, and sunset views over the water. He was spot on. We stayed 5 nights and were treated to a spectacular show every single night.
Aside from our most excellent site, the best part of this campground was the kayaking trails. Since we stayed for the weekend we were able to do a really long kayak that took us around an island, through a magical cypress swamp and along a series of canals.
We also did some biking and hiking on the trails and around the campground. It’s a big place with two separate areas on either side of the road, cabins, awesome tent sites with open water views, and a few fun bike/hike trails with lots of bridges.
We enjoyed our time here so much that we extended for an additional night so we could enjoy both weekend days. It means that we’ll have to do some extra after work driving this week to make it to Tucson by the 19th, but it was well worth it.

You’re right……That area looks more Louisiana than Texas. Looks like an awesome spot to get out on the water or just enjoy the sunsets!
It really did look like Louisiana…or Florida. Not what we expected from Texas at all!
This place looks heavenly! Good to know there is a decent place to stay in East Texas!
You’re coming to Tucson? Awesome! That’s where we are–though we’ll be gone for about 10 days at Christmas. How long will you be here? Maybe we can meet! :-)
We’ll be in Tucson at the Gilbert Ray Campground from the 19th to the 26th. We would love to meet if you’re around.
Glad Texas finally showed its pretty side for you guys! What a beautiful park! It sounds really familiar so I’m guessing I must have driven by it at some point in my 27 years as a Texan. :)
You probably have :)
In March, we’ll be making our way through Texas heading west. It’s great to learn about this park!
It was a great place to stop for a bit!
Beautiful! Texas is full of surprises, isn’t it? We’ll put this one on our list, since traveling through Texas is often on our trajectory when we’re heading to or from Florida. We love kayaking through cypress swamps!
Yes, definitely put it on the list. It’s a little off the beaten path, but well worth the drive.
Beautiful! Used to live in DFW and my favorite area was the Piney Woods of East TX, Tyler State Park was always a fun place to stay, as well as some of the COE parks in that region of the state.
Definitely an area we plan to go back to!
I have our trailer parked in Austin and we have been living in it for about 4 months now . We haven’t made it to East Texas yet for any trips but I’ve heard from so many people that it’s really beautiful! These photos prove it ! Thanks for sharing!

You found a gem there! That is our favorite kind of campground. Nothing better than waterfront campsite with beautiful sunset views. Safe travels as you continue on your journey west!
