Living in an airstream has forced us to rethink our hobbies. Anything that requires a large amount of space, uses tons of electricity or can’t be tucked away in a cupboard while we drive is out. Oh, and anything outside that requires your own plot of land is not happening when you live a different campground every week. That means what used to be my most obsessive hobby- gardening, is no longer an option. Of course, if I am being completely truthful I would admit that during the last year we lived in our house gardening had become more of a chore and less of a hobby. It was like I hobbied my way into a never ending cycle of weeding, edging, pruning, mulching- and then doing it all over again. Somewhere along the way the fun got lost in all that repetitive manual labor. I digress though, because what I really want to talk about is my new hobby- embroidery!
For many years I’ve gone through different phases of sewing/needlecraft. For awhile I was into quilting and spent hours cutting out squares and pondering what shade of blue looked best next to that other shade of blue. Then I moved onto knitting, which quickly turned into a love of felting and I spent many a winter night with my needles clicking away happily. I tried to carry the knitting hobby over into my airstream life. But since felted knit pieces are my favorite and it’s pretty hard to felt something without a washing machine, or at least a large supply of hot water and some strong arm muscles, that was out. So I decided to teach myself embroidery. Doesn’t require a large amount of space, check. Doesn’t use any electricity, check. Can be tucked away in a cupboard while we drive, check. A perfect airstream hobby!
As it turns out I am pretty good at this embroidery thing. I spent awhile learning the various stitches and then worked on some practice pieces before moving onto my own designs. I’ve really been enjoying creating various designs that incorporateĀ an airstream theme.
In fact, I am enjoying embroidery so much that I have opened my very own Etsy shop. The shop is a work in progress and for now consists only of the four pieces that I am sharing here with you. I have many more ideas floating around in my head though and plan to continue adding items. My shop is called TheWanderingThreads and you can find it by clicking on the link or going to Etsy and searching for The Wandering Threads shop. There you will find more pics of each piece, as well as info regarding size, materials and price. I am also open to special orders and design ideas/requests.
Embroidery has quickly turned into the best hobby I’ve ever had and I am excited by the thought of sharing my creations with others.

Oh, wow, these are SO great! You really do some beautiful work.
Thank you :)
Great close-up shots!
Thanks!
Beautiful creations! I use to embroider years ago and thought about taking it up in the motor home again. But then I haven’t actually had time for it yet. Still trying to fit in more reading time but there is just too much to see in this country.
Glad you found a new hobby and way to share it with others. You definitely are good at it!! Love all those French Knots!
Thanks! The french knots are my favorite. I am working on some french knot flowers right now.
Very, very pretty items! I love embroidery and used to do lots of it (my sister is still an avid embroiderer…if that’s what you call ’em).

Thanks Nina!
