We arrived in Pennsylvania today and couldn’t be more thrilled with our new digs.
Driving into the Allegheny National Forest was like coming home. The forest is truly where my heart lies. Yes, the Finger lakes region is beautiful with its gentle rolling hills, sparkling lakes and scenic vistas, but in my mind all that pales in comparison to the acres and acres of deeply forested land that make up the Allegheny. Driving into the forest was like entering a magical land. Giant trees towered above a vibrant lush green undergrowth, and as we coasted down a steep hill the forest gave way to a wide, deep blue river. Ahh…nature, nothing compares.
We are staying at the Buckaloons Recreation Area just west of Warren, PA on the banks of the Alleghany River. We chose this particular campground because it was one of the few in the national forest were we could receive cell service. Cell service means internet service and internet service means Tim can work and I can blog/converse/research. I was a little afraid that because we’re right on the edge of the forest it wouldn’t be as wild as if we stayed farther in, but so far my worries seem unfounded. We arrived kind of late in the day so not many pictures were taken, but we did take a stroll around the campground and found some amazing, HUGE, trees. Can’t wait to photograph them tomorrow and share with you all.
Speaking of trees, our campsite has a special weeping tree that creates a natural “room” where the fire pit lies. Our site is rather narrow (yes, it was a good test of just how tight a spot we could fit the airstream into) so I couldn’t get a picture of the whole tree but trust me, it’s very cool.
We are excited to get in some hiking tomorrow. There are tons of trails around here to explore and many of them run along the river. Till then I leave you with one of my favorite quotes from John Muir.
“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.”
So true.

You have the right idea!
