Another awesome Florida state park! I’m continually baffled as to why anyone would choose a cramped private park over a state park with large sites and scenic views. For a long term stay it makes sense, but other than that I just don’t get it. On the other hand, I am glad not everyone wants to stay here because then our chance of getting a site would be even worse. Once again, we snagged our site at Bahia Honda state park a few weeks ago using Tim’s reservation website. Somehow we lucked out and got the best RV waterfront site in the park.
The majority of the water view sites here face the US 1 bridge and get a LOT of road noise. Our site was around the corner with a view of the old railroad bridge instead. We still had a bit of road noise, but nothing that the view didn’t make up for.
We also had the perfect platform for sunset viewing.
Unfortunately, we only got that primo site for 5 nights. However, during that time a cancellation came up and we were able to book another site for an additional week.
The bad? It’s not on the water, has less wind which means more bugs, and the light from the bathroom shines on us all night. The good? We’re still here in the park with easy access to what is definitely the most beautiful beach in the keys.
It hasn’t been the most ideal beach weather this week with temps kind of on the cool side (low 70s) and lots of wind. Don’t feel too bad for us though :) We’ve gotten out for a few afternoon beach walks and one fun kayaking adventure. We tried to go for a longer paddle on Saturday, but between the fierce wind and the strong tidal current we didn’t get far before giving up. Instead Tim got out his kite and did some flying on a shallow sand bar off the beach.
We also had some social fun this week, starting with lunch at The Wharf with fellow Airstreamers Nancy and Charlie who are on an extended trip from Oregon. We met them briefly at the Balloon Fiesta and it was great fun to meet up again. Hope to see you guys somewhere down the road! The Wharf had been highly recommended by many, and I am glad we finally made it there for their famous fish sandwich. We were in luck and the special for the day was grouper, which has quickly become one of my favorite fish. If you can get past the unnecessary slices of orange cheese, it as good as everyone said it would be. How can you go wrong with thick slices of fresh fish lightly battered and served with a tangy sauce? Neither of us could finish our giant sandwiches and we brought home the leftovers for a tasty dinner.
Later in the week we had a gathering at our site with Lauri, Adam & Ilinke (remember them from this post), along with newcomers Nikki & Jason, better known as Gone with the Wynns. It had been over a year since we last saw them and we had a blast catching up. The evening was full of laugher, good food, cute pups, and an another awesome sunset.
I also have to give a shout out to yet another Airstream couple, Tom & Barbara who stopped by to visit one day last week. If you guys are reading this, we’ll be back in Big Pine in a few weeks so expect a visit from us!
That’s it for now. We’re gearing up for a long bike ride this afternoon in anticipation of our super bowl feast later. I just threw some chicken in a marinade for a yummy homemade grilled BBQ chicken pizza. See you all next week with more pics from the beach!

You guys totally scored the best site at Bahia Honda! Must be good karma for so generously sharing Tim’s reservation website. Gorgeous sunset and beach shots. Looks like you’re having a lot of fun. :-)
Good things come to those who are patient!! You certainly scored big on that amazing site. Gorgeous sunsets:) Love all the beautiful water shots. Hope your weather has improved:)
We were not able to stay at Bahia Honda but sure spent a lot of time there. We kayaked off the beach as well and saw lots of nurse sharks. You are so fortunate to have gotten a site there. :)
Fabulous place, we’ve never actually managed to stay there, but love visiting. Have fun!
Glad it is working out for you to keep scoring the most excellent spots. Great tool Tim created. Enjoy
Thanks for this post! It really brings back fond memories of tent camping there when our kids were little back in the 70’s and 80’s. We’ve never camped there in our RV but spent lots of time in the keys over the years since our tent camping days.Great photos!
If you tent camped you must have been in the Sandspur area. We rode out bike through there several times and loved the ocean views. No RVs allowed in the that loop though.
Just stumbled on your website today and I’m trying it out. Guess we were neighbors at Bahia Honda…my wife and I were in site 31 the 18th–31st of Jan and I see you may have been in site 30 while we were there. We hope our smoker didn’t make the air too thick to breathe for you.
Yup, we moved over to site 30 on the 30th so we were indeed neighbors. Too bad we didn’t know it then. Oh, and know that you mention it, I remember a delicious smell from next door. Must have been your smoker :)
[…] If you are huddled somewhere keeping warm this week, this week’s hidden find will help warm you up. […]
Great Pictures! We finally booked a spot at BHSP – site 14 for next April – I have been trying for over a month to book anything in that camp ground. I came across your website while searching for pictures of site 14. I can not wait, your pictures make it look awesome!!! We have stayed at Penny Camp in the past and are booked for Long Key this August (lobster season). Wishing you both safe travels!
How exciting! You’re going to love it!
